Fossil Sirenia of the West Atlantic and Caribbean region. III. Xenosiren yucateca, gen. et sp. nov.
Jour. Vert. Pal. 9(4): 429-437. 1 tab. 7 figs. Dec. 19, 1989.
–Describes a partial skull from the Upper Miocene or Lower Pliocene of Yucatan, Mexico; it is considered a rytiodontine and a direct descendant of Dioplotherium. Its cranial specializations are interpreted as adaptations for uprooting seagrass rhizomes using both jaws and tusks. urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:DC4F2A71-A983-481D-B064-64381E78A7C8
