| 1980 | Feeding position preference in manatees (Trichechus). Jour. Mamm. 61(3): 544-547. 2 tabs. Aug. 20, 1980. –Experiments comparing feeding behavior of captive T. inunguis and T. m. latirostris showed that both prefer to feed as low as possible in the water column. This is interpreted to mean that all sirs., due to their subterminal mouths and regardless of rostral deflection, find it more energetically efficient to feed lower in the water column. This in turn suggests a possible selective value for evolutionary changes in rostral deflection. | ||
